A Message from the Superintendent

Last year in the Back to School Newsletter, I wrote about my excitement for school to start.  Setting up classrooms for a new school year has always been a special time for me.  I also quoted Horace Mann in saying, “Education, beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of the conditions of men.”  This year, in light of COVID-19, that excitement is greater than ever before.

During the month of July, a Task Force comprised of school staff and patrons met each Wednesday to draft a Reopening Plan for the St. Maries School District Trustees to consider.  The Task Force was dedicated, thoughtful, and open minded in developing a plan that they felt would provide the best opportunity for students to learn in a manner that fits the needs of their family and keeps their children safe.

When schools were closed in March of 2019, it broke my heart!  Education has been my life’s work, and I strongly believe that the best and safest place for students is in school.  The 2020-2021 school year will be different.  Practices and procedures in our classrooms will take on a different meaning.  Washing our hands in the past may have been about removing playground dirt, while now it is more about protecting ourselves and others from a virus.  Although some things will change, I can assure you that it continues to be the intent of the Trustees, administration, and staff of our District to provide all children with an opportunity to learn and grow safely.

I ask that we all practice an extra bit of understanding this year.  We are traveling a road we have never taken before.  We don’t know what bumps or curves may lie ahead.  I ask that we are patient with each other, and respect others as they make decisions that they believe are in the best interests of children.  Together, we can reach our goals.
